Interview with “The GURU”

May 30, 2011

The Party Plan Guru is always interested in finding out about the people behind the parties, if you know the people then you can really feel confident in letting them into your home and having a bit of fun with them. It also means that your hostess will invite you back for more parties.

Here is our conversation with Glenda Hayes and we hope that you will be able to relate to her in your own business.

Name of Business:    Phoenix Trading

Your Name and Age:  Glenda Hayes   46

Tell us about your family (partner, children, ages, where you live etc: whatever you feel happy sharing)

I have twin daughters who are now teenagers (15) and am currently single.  I live in Aldershot, Hants but grew up in North Yorkshire.

What did you do before coming up with your business idea (previous career, stay at home mum etc) and how was it making the transition?

Prior to starting up my Phoenix business I was teaching at a local FE college.  Sadly I was made redundant and came across Phoenix shortly afterwards when I was looking for something else to fill the gap.

When did you launch?

I began with Phoenix in November 2006

How did you get started?

I first saw the products on sale at a local charity fair where I made a purchase and took home a brochure.  It was only when I looked through the brochure that I realised they were recruiting.  I decided there and then to give it a go.

What research did you do before launching? How have you funded the business?

I had no real fund when I started out as although I’d just been made redundant, I had not worked there for very long so anything I had been paid had already been swallowed by the normal household bills.  I started with £200 which came from savings.

How do you promote your business? What has worked best?

I promote in person, by word of mouth, I give out numerous catalogues every year, business cards, some paid adverts, and now I also use Facebook and Twitter.

In person always works well as you have chance to meet people and chat to them and can then talk easily about how the business would fit into their life.  Online advertising is also becoming very popular and also generates many leads.

What has worked well about your business?

The flexibility is great and can be worked to fit around your family, another part time job or other regular commitments.  The products are such good quality at a reasonable price, so you really don’t need to be good at selling as once people see them they almost sell themselves !

What has been your biggest challenge so far? How have you dealt with it?

My biggest challenge was when I was rather unwell about a year ago.  However, I managed to easily keep the business going whilst also having time for myself in order to speed my recovery.  The fact that most of my work can be done from home is a real bonus.

How do you fit in work with the family?

I work when my daughters are at school, making bookings, ordering and supporting my team.  I also attend events.  This generally means that when my girls are at home in the evenings I can be around and give them my full attention.  I sometimes attend weekend events and they are able to come along with me if they wish which means they get to go to lots of interesting events, that they may otherwise miss.

What advice would you give to someone else wanting to work in this area?

Do give it a try, it can be run to suit you entirely.  You can do as much or as little as you wish, there are no set targets. You can start by taking orders from brochures with no need to hold any stock at whatsoever and then if you wish you can build up from there.

If you have a flexible working business opportunity, please explain briefly what you offer and how people find out more.

I am able to offer a flexible business opportunity for anyone in the UK, France, USA, Australia or New Zealand.  There is more information available on my website, or I can be contacted by email, or telephone 01252 409756 to request a full information pack in the post.

I am currently running  loyalty scheme where customers will receive one “stamp” for every £10 spent.  Five “stamps” can be redeemed for a £5 gift voucher or 10 “stamps” for a £10 voucher.  The voucher can be spent by the customer or given by them to another friend or relative as a gift.

Thank you Glenda and Good Luck,
