Look into basic body language! Not only can your words show off your emotions but your body can do this too.

As we are approaching the busiest time of year for parties and recruiting consultants I would really look into your style of approaching people. When I talk to people sometimes I find myself not making eye contact and also folding my arms. Not looking at a person can show that you are lying and folding your arms can show you are defensive about the person or the comment that they have just made. Its funny because sometimes I am not feeling that way, crossing/folding my arms is more comfortable for me. On the last couple of events ad meeting new recruits I wanted to find out what were positive body language options for selling and making the person feel relaxed with me.

Here are a few examples of good body language:

Eye Contact is one of the most important steps to achieving good body language. Eye contact tells a person that you are interested in what they are saying, it also means that you are confident in what you are saying to them.

Smiling. When you smile it show positive body language. A smile will encourage a person to talk to you and shows that you are a happy and confident person.

Head gestures. Holding your head up high will show confidence. Nodding and leaning your head towards a person and shows then that you are listening.

Hand ans Arms. Avoid crossing your arms or hiding your hands while trying to display a positive body language. Use hand gestures and even lightly touch a person arm or hand while talking with them to display confidence.

Legs. If sitting down keep feet planted on the ground. A crossed leg will appear un-approachable and that you may have a defensive attitude. Dangling your legs will show a person that you are carefree and may not be focused and determined.

These are obviously a basic understanding of body language and being in a sales role, as we are, you need to be as approachable as possible. If you are going to an event this weekend look out for the busy stands and see what the person behind the brand is doing.are they sat down or standing up? Crossed legs and arms or throwing their arms around with enthusiasm for their products.

Do something out of your comfort zone and when you have crossed arms think to yourself why? What has made me be like this? You will be surprised at what you might learn.

Enjoy your Friday and the weekend.

As most of you know I have a facebook page where we discuss lots of different topic and we are also able to have a bit of fun too. While talking last night on facebook with regards to your funniest party or hostess, Emma Guilford from Vie at Home made a very interesting comment and it made me want to write something about it. So much so that I am typing this on my touch pad while I am in bed!!!! (I know, madness)

Emma wrote:

Hello fellow Party Planners……….. I am getting quite a few ladies from other party plan companies asking me to join their team and unfortunately in not a very professional manner. Actually really quite rude suggesting incorrect details which is not good for business. What, your thoughts?

I really appreciate Emma talking about this subject as this is something that does come up a lot when I talk to party planners/direct sellers. Although it is not really spoken about very often there is a role when you are trying to recruit people into your business. You need to remember at the beginning that this is your business and the people that you will be employing, will not only be representing the company but also you!

I am sorry to say but this sometimes can be from the attitude of the manager that recruited them but it can also be from their own ways of communicating with others. When you are recruiting into your business you need to think about what this person wants. Do they want to go up the ladder and start making a successful business, if they do then train them well. The training is not all about the products and the offers that you are able to give the hostess but it is also about training your team to proceed in the right manner whether they are talking to a recruit or hostess. Is no on professional anymore?

The interesting thing is that I went to an event on Saturday and I was talking to a party planner and about her business. I don`t know her and I was talking about the recruitment process within her business and the team that she currently has. I have to say that I have never seen a more negative person in my life and I am shocked that she has managed to get to the position that she has been able to.

Kindness is FREE and attitude is everything or so the sayings go, so why do we have so many people working in this industry that give the good ones a bad name?

Here are my tips for showing potential recruits why they need you:

Always greet people with the same smile and enthusiasm as you do your hostesses.

Don`t be too pushy, if you push someone into joining your business they wont last very long.

Relate the products to their own lifestyle (this means finding but about someone first)

Dont try and recruit someone at an event – build the interest and arrange an interview time for them to go through everything with you then. Someone has taken the time to find out about the products already and is keen to join so spend some time with this person getting to know what she wants to achieve. It will make your life so much easier.

You know what they say about taking your personal life to work with you, if you have had a rough day with the kids or had an argument with your partner/husband/wife before coming out leave it at the door. Being in a bad or irritated mood will come across to the prospective recruit and they are not a prospective recruit anymore, well not for you anyway!

Calm is key – allow yourself to plan out what you would say to prospective recruits, practise at home, you will not mumble when someone asks you something and you will be able to be controlled rather than desperate. (we have all been there, getting recruits is exciting as it is building your business, this made me over excited like a 4 year old of cola, which made my pitch sloppy and all over the place)

These tips just scratch the surface but attitude really is everything in party plan/direct sales. Being polite, well mannered and respectful to others seems to have got lost somewhere along the way. I wonder what some people what brought up thinking, its ok to treat people in a bad way, step on everyone until you get to the top, the meaner you are the more people will ok what you want, lying pays, telling someone that you are something that you are not or providing a service that has been taken from someone elses hard work.
If I spoke to some people the way I get spoken to by some party planners about being recruited I am shocked that they are in business at all.

You tell me, is the generation of party planners that we have coming into the businesses or is it just the fact that they have not been given the training that they need to recruit properly?

It makes me laugh that people start their own businesses so that they are able to spend more time with their kids, the problem is that when they get older it is not as easy to keep them entertained while you are trying to run your business from home.

Just to add a bit more pressure for you, have you thought about when they do go back, have you organised your time and already started booking up parties and events ready for christmas? If you have not thought about it then I am sure others have done and you might find it a bit of a struggle to get on to some events. I know it is hard, but take some time out of your day over the next coupld of days and sort out all of the different places you might wish to attend.

My tip this week is to get organised and sort out the toddler groups and nurserys in your area. When they all go back you are able to make sure that you are attedning on the lead up to christmas. If it is good you may think about attending every month until christmas so that all of the mums will know you will be there, if they dont have money the first time, they will the second time.

The more things that you are able to set the ball rolling for now, before the kids go back to school, the less likely you are going to find yourself in a lull or take a couple of week to get back into the swing of things.

“Fail to Prepare, then Prepare to Fail”

Make it your mission for the next couple of days next week to set aside time to focus on when the kids go back to school and you will be able to spend the rest of the holidays with them.

I wanted to mention a company that are getting into the Party Plan Scene, if you have not heard of FingerPrint Jewellery then you need to see the exciting things that they are doing for people that are mums, grandmothers, step mums, wives, grandparents and even for dads.

As we are getting ever closer to Christmas I thought I would mention then as you might wish to have a party in the areas that they are based to get some gifts at a discounted price and even win yourself some extra things.

FingerPrint Jewellery is an established, thriving and innovative business which produces quality handmade, personalised jewellery. Each item is unique, whether a baby footprint, handprint, fingerprint, doodle, scribble or special message – each can be captured in pure solid silver, ensuring that the recipient will have a keepsake to treasure.

Started by Lisa Pugh, FingerPrint Jewellery has grown in such a way that it lends itself to expansion through franchise, appealing especially to those with a creative flair wishing to run their own business from home. It is a home business that is suited to part-time mums or full-timers.

Franchisee support not only includes comprehensive training and back up but also the many benefits of an ongoing national advertising and a recently launched PR campaign. A unique feature of the FingerPrint Jewellery business model is the excellent integration between its website and its franchisees. All orders received via the website will automatically be assigned to the franchisee covering the customer’s area. In addition, any enquiries for hosting parties or further information are also forwarded to the individual franchisee upon receipt.

Training takes place at the FingerPrint studio, where franchisees learn all of the skills and techniques necessary to create beautiful and individual pieces of jewellery from their own work area at home. A dedicated online shop allows for the easy purchase of supplies and stationery, everything is delivered to the door, so no having to shop around.

Apart from the obvious baby and child imprints there are many other exciting markets that the company is currently breaking into, offering new and profitable avenues for franchisees to follow and develop within their region.

The initial outlay for the franchise covers all training and includes a comprehensive set of tools and equipment, advertising and promotional materials as well as everything else needed to establish a business from day one.

If becoming a franchisee is not something you are looking for, have a party and experience everything that FingerPrint Jewellery has to offer.

As it is coming up to one of the businest times of year for us all I thought that I would put a few tips down on how to recruit into your business and just making a few changes could mean more consultants for you

4 Great Ways to Get Interested Folks to Join Your Business

• Use the internet – Nowadays, almost everyone is on Facebook. Since it is a great way to reconnect with long lost friends, this website is being used by almost everyone on the planet. Through this website, many also post business opportunity announcements, marketing tactics and even event posters. You can use this to your advantage because you will be able to get more people to see your event.

• Offer delicious snacks – During your event, make sure that you offer delicious snacks to your guests. This is because if you have delicious food, they won’t feel the need to get out of the vicinity. In fact, there are some of them who will be back for seconds. This is a great way you can get them to listen to you attentively.

• Be funny and conversational – Since the point of the party is to get them to listen about your business proposal, you have to make sure that your speech is conversational and funny. You don’t necessarily have to train for a stand up comedienne. You just need to know how to hit the right marks in terms of keeping guests entertained. When you are able to do this correctly, your guests will want to stay until the end of your speech because they are so engrossed in what you are saying.

• Be direct and straight to the point – It is only common that people hate being lied to. When you are inviting them to your party, make sure that you tell them that you have a business proposal they might be interested in. Never keep quiet about your purpose of inviting them to the event. If you do this, they will only be disappointed and have a negative notion from the start of the event. Even if you are selling them something that’s highly marketable, they will not agree with it because they have been lied to.

Here are my top 5 games for this month, Enjoy:

The Worm Game

For this game you will need one small gift nicely wrapped or in a
gift bag.

“This is the worm. This worm is going to help us get acquainted
today.” Start by introducing yourself and describe kitchen with an adjective that begins with the same letter of your first name. For example, My name is Melissa and my kitchen is messy and this is the worm. Then the next person will introduce themselves and repeat back the first person’s name and kitchen description. This keeps going until everyone has introduced themselves and everyone prior to them. As the group continues to pass the worm and introduce themselves and previous people, the Rep. should assist anyone needing help with name and/or adjective. After everyone is done the Rep. takes the worm back. Then will ask “Who was the first guest to arrive here today?” When the person is identified, they are given the worm (gift), and the Rep. says, “Great, the early bird gets the worm!”

Where am I Game (or What am I Game)

This simple icebreaker game works great to get your guests talking to each other, and it helps to avoid deafening silence at the start of your party when no one knows each other).

Cut photos out of magazines (or print your own), and tape one photo to each guest’s back as they come in. Each guest has to ask other guests simple questions about what the photo is in order to guess what his or her picture is of (Grand Canyon, Eiffel Tower, Golden Gate bridge, or some type of animal or common item). Each guest who figures out what his or her picture is gets a small gift or discount. Be prepared for all guests to win (so pre-set discounts are probably the best!)

The Floor Game

Give each guest three pieces of paper and ask them to put their name on each piece. Collect all papers and put them in a bag or bowl. On the floor, place three or four small prizes. Start calling names from the bowl. When each name is called the guests have to pick something from the floor. When the items are gone off the floor, they have to take from each other. When all the names have been called three times, the guests left holding a prize wins.

Blue Light Special

This is fun for everyone.

Set timer and demonstrate your product. What ever item your holding when the timer goes off is on sale for the duration of the party.

How well do you know your hostess?

Give a piece of paper to your guest and have them number it from 1-10 then ask them the following questions.

1) What is your hostess’s favorite color?
2) If she could have any vehicle what would it be?
3) How many kids does she have?
4) What is her favorite hobby?
5) Who is her favorite actor/actress?
6) What is her favorite item on the table?
7) What is her favorite scent (can be a perfume)?
What is her favorite cartoon / cartoon character?
9) What is her favorite animal?
10) If you were in need of something would your hostess give it to you if she can?

After everyone answers the questions then I read the question again to the hostess and she will reply out loud what her answer is, and they would mark on the paper if they got it right or wrong. Then they total up their score.

Now you can rearrange or change any of these questions but this gives you an ideal of a game you can play. I put the last one in there and saved it for last cause this is a way to lead into how your guest can get free products and help your hostess at the same time for having a party. Cause right now your hostess needs something from them that they are the only ones that can give it to her, and that is to book a party so she can get more free products. The one with the most answers correct gets something from the goodie bag.

Can you believe that we are already half way through August, soon the kids will be back at school (I am sure some of you will be glad of the peace and quiet) and the next thing we are all thinking about is Christmas. Some stores like Harrods have already got their Christmas decorations up and ready for people to purchase. Personally I find it all a bit scary and it always seems to come along way too fast for my liking, but that could be because I am getting old and have a large birthday next year.!! Can you guess which one??? Comment below

I know that it is scary but you need to start thinking about Christmas, it is your busiest time of year and there is so much to do to make sure that you have a really successful one.

Plan the rest of the year out, some shops have the year calendars on offer at the moment and if you can get one and jot down everything you have going on until then. You will be able to see the weeks that you do not have anything going on, or that you only have a couple of parties booked that week. Set yourself a target and what you hope to achieve, find out or work out when your last christmas delivery will be, you don’t want to book an event after your last delivery as people will want to have this for christmas.

Think about all the parties that will be coming up soon, maybe it is an idea to get into some local businesses to be able to show off our christmas items. It is also a great time to look ahead to october and november, if you are in a an area with guest houses and hotels, get booked in now for their Tinsel and Turkey weeks and weekends and get your products sold.

I am not writing this to make you panic, you just really need to think about christmas early, this is where you will make so much more money than you did over the summer or the spring time. Remember to wear products, show them off and tell everyone you know. When friends mention about presents remind them what you do for a living and if your friend gets others to buy from you, she could get a free present of her own.

With all you consultants with new products and new catalogues out now, you need to start pushing and listen to what people are staying, if you miss something its a lost sale. Mention about the personal aspects of your products, the gift opportunities. Go through your new catalogues and make sure you know what you are talking about and what you have to offer. It will all just start to flow then.

Good Luck xx

I wanted to write this post today as I have had a lot of people talk to me about events that they went to this weekend. I also got a few comments from you on Facebook as well about your experiences.

This weekend I had a couple of followers all at the same event in Dorset and it was set to be a great event. It was held in a large well-known place, they had been planning the event for months and it was all about families and babies (some of you may well know what I am talking about, but don’t want to mention all the details!!)

Some stand holders had paid an amount of £110.00 per 6ft table for the saturday and Sunday, not a bad price if it is for both days all weekend. There would be activities for the kids and then others would be able to have a look around the stalls for gifts for their friends or themselves. Great concept and I have to say it does work really well have a mother and baby show or baby event. The organisers had explained that they would be selling tickets before and on the weekend of the event, 1 month before they advised that they had ordered 1,000 tickets and would need to order more. (does this or does this not imply that they probably have sold the 1,000 tickets to have to order more???)

Unfortunately all of the expectations for the weekend fell down completely on the first day, not many people attended, although the organisers believed there had been 500 people through the door. If there is a family of 4 (two children, 2 Adults) 250 of these would be children, 125 are men so that only leaves about 125 women, who we all know are more likely to spend and some of the items that we sell as Party Planners/Direct Sellers are targeted to women!!!

By lunch time most of the traders were not happy as they had not sold anything, with the so-called amount of people who had been coming through the door they should have been able to sell at least 1 item, wouldn’t they????

Sunday was about the same and the organisers were about to have a revolt on their hands, did they help the stand holders, reassure them that everything was being done and had been done to make sure that people were coming through the door?? The organisers were not this way at all, they were just happy as they had made money and if the stall holders had not then that was just luck of the draw.

Now I am all for Luck of the Draw at events but when I have paid £10-£15 for the table, not £110.00. When the events are slow you will find that you are talking to other stall holders but this also means that some people are talking about the price that they paid to be there. One lady had paid £100.00 for a 6ft table and got a 4ft table and a 6ft by 6ft stand squared so most of her space was not used, another lady paid £80.00 for her stand and found that the lady next to her had a stand for £100.

I think that some of the events charge way too much for their stands and they can not always guarantee that there will be people through the door.

Think about:

Where you go with the kids and your partner

Check that there are not larger events going on on the same day

Think back a year and what was an event that you remember (this can be hard but you will soon realise the ones that others talk about)

Ask friends and family if it i something that they would attend.

You need to weigh up the pros and cons of every event that you attend and I have to say that the cheap ones are always the better ones.

Here are the answers to the questions I asked on facebook:

Thank you to Sam Cornwell, Joanne Dewberry (from www.joannedewberry.co.uk) and Melany Simpson for your input. Joanne is right, you should always have a budget for the events that you attend and if they are more than that, ask yourself why and is it worth it?? Melany has turned a negative into a positive, if in doubt RECRUIT!!

Comment below and tell us how you get on at events.

Yes its the holidays and Yes the kids are around all the time at the moment and I am sure that you can not wait for September to come round. But the more you think about September coming the faster it will come and you will have missed out on your kids summer holiday.

My tip of the week is to take time out with the family.

I am completely guilty of this and don’t realise I have not gone out or taken my child swimming or to the park, because I was too busy answering phone calls or sending emails.

We are all doing this to spend more time with the kids, so why don’t we???

This week, schedule in half a day or a full day with the kids or even just for yourself. You know what they say “All work and no play makes you a dull person”
